EPH 21500 - Solid & Hazardous Waste Management


(4) Introduces the principles of sold and hazardous waste management and their public health significance. The course covers solid waste management practices in road system communities and remote villages in Alaska. Conventional solid and hazardous waste practices are covered including: Planning for Municipal Solid Waste Management Programs, Solid Waste Stream Characteristics and Source Reduction - Quantity and Toxicity, Collection of Sold Waste, Recycling, Markets and Products for Recycled Material, Household Hazardous Wastes and other Special Wasts, Composting of Municipal Solid Waste, Waste to Energy Combustion, and Landfilling. Federal and state solid waste regulations are introduced.  In addition, the course covers Solid and Hazardous Waste Management in a Linear versus a Circular economy (local to global), studies the devastating effects of plastics in the environment (local to global), and explores “zero waste” strategies.
