SC 42600 - Earth Materials (4) The chemical and physical properties of the material components of the Earth, including minerals, rocks, soil and water, and their uses in modern society. The role of water in magma generation, plate tectonics and metamorphism, and how water-rock interactions are expressed in the Earth’s crust. Students will learn how to identify, classify, and interpret the major rock types and rock-forming minerals. Soil formation and the importance of soils in the biosphere will also be covered. Emphasis will be on the significance of common minerals in the context of Earth’s driving processes such as tectonics, weathering and erosion. Prerequisite: SC12000. Offered Spring.
