The Environmental Science Department offers programs that address the most pressing questions in Earth Science, Marine Biology, and Environmental Science in the 21st century. Students engage in cutting edge research, expand skills through field study, and directly experience natural processes in the pristine environment of Alaska as well as other locations around the globe.
The department offers undergraduate degrees in Earth Science (B.S. and minor), Environmental Science (B.S. and minor), Marine Biology (B.S. and minor), Environmental Policy (minor) and Mathematics for Environmental Science (minor). These degree programs focus on developing a firm conceptual understanding of the natural world in order to understand human impacts on the world. Course, lab, and field work cover topics in the natural sciences, conservation, resource management, environmental policy, and quantitative approaches. Graduates of these degree programs go on to graduate school or employment with environmental consulting firms, industry, non-governmental organizations, and government agencies.
At the graduate level, the department offers the Master of Science in Environmental Science (MSES). The MSES program is designed for students seeking deeper understanding of the role of science in conservation, policy, and society.
Graduates of the Environmental Science Department degree programs:
- Gain knowledge in a diverse array of natural and management sciences
- Complete significant environmental projects including class exercises, internships, and field experiences, culminating in a senior project or master’s thesis
- Possess technical abilities in research, statistics, GIS, as well as field and laboratory practices to address contemporary environmental and natural resource issues
