Liberal Studies Department

The Liberal Studies Department offers a broad spectrum of core curriculum and specialized study dedicated to developing cultural and historical perspective.  By focusing on essential skills such as effective communication, critical thinking, and creativity, by studying the relationship between past and present, by approaching issues though local and global knowledge bases, and by drawing attention to sustainability as a way of life, we prepare students in all majors for roles as leaders in their communities and their professions.

The department offers undergraduate degrees in: Liberal Studies (B.A. [with options for concentrations] and minor); Alaska Native Governance (B.A.); Creative & Professional Writing (B.A.); and Sustainability Studies (B.A. and minor).  Also at the undergraduate level, the department advises students taking APU’s Pre-Med concentration.  At the graduate level, the department houses the Master of Arts Program (MAP), designed for individuals pursuing advanced learning through individualized, self-directed contract-learning.

The Department remains focused on the liberal arts heritage fostered by APU Founder Rev. Dr. Peter Gordon Gould, an Aleut minister born in Ungla, Alaska.  We honor the Alaskan and Alaska Native communities from which APU was born and encourage students to achieve resilience, communicate clearly, solve problems creatively, and embrace lifelong learning.
