Pre-Med Interdisciplinary Concentration

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Undergraduate & Graduate Academic Degree Offerings

The Pre-Med program is an interdisciplinary concentration, which means that it can be taken by students in any major.  Required courses in the concentration can double-count with Foundational Studies, Major Studies, or minors.  Students have an academic advisor for their major degree program.  Additionally, they work with a Pre-Med advisor for guidance through the required curriculum and preparation for applications to medical or allied health graduate programs.

There are many paths that can lead a student to medical school.  Although still the most common path, success in medical school admissions is no longer solely dependent upon an undergraduate degree in the biological sciences.  Majors in the liberal arts, social sciences, and any of the science fields can open the door to medical careers.  As medical schools have incorporated more humanist approaches to the practice of medicine, applicants with non-traditional backgrounds are being accorded weight in the admissions process.  Completion, in good standing, of the required curriculum in the pre-med interdisciplinary concentration will allow graduates from any APU degree program to confidently and competitively apply for admission to medical school and/or other allied health programs.

Required Curriculum (68 credits)

Net total credits to add concentration (40)

Courses required for the pre-med interdisciplinary concentration can double-count for Foundational or Major Studies.  Completion of the pre-med required curriculum overlaps and covers 28 credits within the Foundational Studies including:  EC Written Communication; CT Computation; CH Intellectual Traditions;  CH Creative Endeavors;  CH Intercultural & Spiritual Understandings; SI Biological/Physical Scientific Inquiry;  SI Social/Behavioral Scientific Inquiry.

Anatomy and Organic Chemistry II are not currently offered at APU.  The Pre-Med advisor can provide guidance about how to take these from University of Alaska, Anchorage, another Eco League school, or other institutions.

Students can work with advisors to petition the Registrar for the ability to tailor some requirements if specific graduate schools have different prerequisite requirements.
