Environmental Public Health (B.S)

The B.S. in Environmental Public Health (EPH) at APU prepares students to be environmental health professionals who investigate, report, and address environmental hazards in the built and natural environment. APU’s program focuses on applied environmental health science complemented by field-work in Alaska’s urban and rural communities.

This program’s emphasis on applied science, the environment, health and wellness, and rural and urban Alaska reflects APU’s current mission of active learning in the field utilizing Alaska as its classroom.
 

Program Delivery:

Environmental Public Health will blend campus based, distance, and independent learning: enabling an educational experience in a variety of settings.  SC courses and EPH electives will be campus based, EPH foundational courses will be elearn, and EPH practicum credits will be earned through work experience.  EPH electives will be stand alone courses (no prerequisites) with professional certificates. Students will spend 2-3 years on campus,  with the option of 1-2 years off campus completing practicum, senior project, and  EPH foundational requirements.

Graduates earn a Bachelor of Science degree with demonstrated achievement in APU’s Essential Competencies:  Effective Communication [EC]; Critical Thinking [CT]; Cultural & Historical Perspective [CH]; Scientific Inquiry [SI]; and Ethical Engagement [EE].
 

Professional Competencies:  Environmental Public Health majors are expected to demonstrate:

1. The knowledge and skills to contribute to the profession environmental health. (CH, CT, SI, EE)
2. The ability to work as part of a health team in the public or private sector. (EC, CH)
3. An understanding and interest in the requirements of continuing education and professional duties. (EE, CT)
4. Competency in the natural sciences including biology, chemistry, physics, and geology. (SI)
5. Understanding core concepts of environmental health.  (CH,SI)
6. Understanding of Alaska Native and rural culture. (CH)
7. Understanding of environmental risk analysis, mitigation, and emergency management.  (CT, EC, CH, SI)
8. Understanding of Environmental Health related policy, law, and administration. (CH, CT)
