The B.S. in Health Sciences at APU prepares students to work in health-related fields in several capacities and/or prepares them for graduate study in the health sciences. The program emphasizes cultural safety and is rooted in cultural awareness, cultural competence, and cultural responsiveness. Major studies within Health Sciences are supplemented by one of five concentrations: Pre-Health, Pre-Nursing, Behavioral Health, Healthcare Management, and Sport Science.

The Concentration in Sports Science prepares students to positively contribute to the fields of wellness and physical fitness as professionals. The concentration is interdisciplinary incorporating APU’s Liberal Studies core as a basis for further study in health sciences, natural sciences, health and wellness, outdoor studies, and business. Indigenous knowledge will be incorporated as a component of course requirements and course content.
The program is aimed at current and future students and athletes with interest in developing careers in competitive and recreational sports and exercise professions. The program prepares students for further degrees and credentials such as Physician Assistant, Physical Therapy, EMT/Paramedic, and graduate school in sports related disciplines.
The program will be applied and experiential in nature utilizing APU’s campus and Southcentral Alaska’s abundant physical and human resources. APU’s growing online presence will allow students flexibility in scheduling.
