SC 34700 - Organic Chemistry I(4)
This course focuses on the structure, properties, bonding, stereochemistry, reactions, and reaction mechanisms of carbon based molecules. Students learn to recognize and name organic functional groups, how structure affects physical properties, how to draw resonance structures using arrow convention, organic acid-base reactions, substitution and elimination reactions and specific syntheses. This course includes a laboratory section where students investigate the reactivity, boiling point, melting point, optical rotation, and solubility of organic compounds. Students also learn how to perform fundamental techniques such as crystallization, filtration, distillation, refractive index, extraction, thin-layer, column and gas chromatography. Prerequisite: .
